Carolina Hurricanes Fund 150,000 Meals for Hungry Kids
The Carolina Hurricanes Foundation is providing 150,000 meals to children facing hunger this summer through a $50,000 grant. The donation helps families who lose access to school breakfast and lunch when classes end.
When summer vacation starts, more than 168,000 children across Central and Eastern North Carolina face a hidden crisis: they lose the free meals they rely on during the school year.
The Carolina Hurricanes Foundation just stepped up with a game-changing solution. The team announced a $50,000 grant to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, funding 150,000 meals through the Stop Summer Hunger initiative.
"Summer should be a time for children to learn, play, and grow, not worry about where their next meal will come from," said Amy Daniels, Executive Director of the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation. The donation is part of the team's playoff grant program, where they give to a deserving nonprofit for each playoff round they reach.
The timing couldn't be more critical. When school ends, parents suddenly need to provide 10 or more additional meals per week for each child. With food costs rising, summer has become the hardest time of year for families already stretching their budgets to the breaking point.

The Food Bank responds by hosting dozens of free meal sites at community centers, churches, and summer camps. Kids and teens can grab meals, snacks, and to-go options alongside outdoor activities and reading programs. These sites work together with over 700 network pantries already serving families year-round.
The Ripple Effect
Every dollar donated to the Food Bank provides three meals, far more than individual shoppers could buy at the grocery store. With matching donations running through July 31, each dollar now fuels six meals for hungry children.
The Hurricanes have now donated $200,000 total through their playoff giving initiative. Since 1997, the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation has contributed more than $17 million to youth-serving organizations across the region.
Food Bank President Amy Beros called the gift transformative: "This generous donation comes at a critical moment, fueling more than 150,000 meals in communities that need it most this summer."
For families wondering how they'll feed their kids this summer, help is arriving right on time.
