Cat Missing 5 Years Returns Home Thanks to Microchip

When Melissa Garci's phone rang with someone saying they had her cat, she couldn't believe it. Artemis had been missing for five years.

The indoor/outdoor cat disappeared from the family's Maryland home back in 2021. Melissa and her daughter Brooke did everything right: they plastered the neighborhood with flyers and searched everywhere, but Artemis was gone.

Then in 2024, a woman found a cat in her unfinished basement and brought it to the Humane Society of Harford County. The staff followed their standard protocol and scanned the cat for a microchip.

They found one. When they traced the chip and called the number, Melissa answered in disbelief.

"Are you sure? My cat has been missing for five years," she told Erin Long from the Humane Society. The answer was yes, they were sure.

Brooke remembers seeing Artemis again for the first time. "I was in disbelief, but when I saw her, I was like, 'Oh my God, she looks exactly the same,'" she told WJZ-TV.

The moment Artemis left her kennel at the shelter, she walked straight to the Garcis and climbed onto both their laps. Long described it as "a beautiful thing."
