Cat Survives Landfill After Being Tossed in Old Couch

When Neal Augenstein's cat Mike didn't show up for dinner, he never imagined his pet was trapped inside an old couch heading to the landfill.

Mike, an 8-year-old tabby, had been part of the family for more than six years. For two days, Augenstein walked his neighborhood with treats, calling Mike's name and checking near sewers.

Then a terrible thought hit him. His family had just thrown out three old couches.

"I was having a sinking feeling that the cat was in the couch," Augenstein said. By the time he realized what might have happened, the furniture was already at the landfill.

The odds of finding a single cat in a massive waste facility seemed impossible. But Mauricio Martinez, a heavy equipment operator, spotted something unusual in the trash pit.

A frightened cat was trapped on a ledge about 15 feet above the ground. There wasn't enough room for Mike to jump to safety.

Martinez and the landfill crew quickly formed a rescue plan. They positioned a loader bucket beneath the ledge and gently coaxed Mike to climb aboard.

"It took us about 10 minutes to get the cat down," said Joshua Murphy, assistant superintendent at the landfill. But Mike wasn't ready to give up his adventure quite yet.

The scrappy cat escaped from his rescuers and crawled through a tunnel into a storage room. Animal control eventually caught him and took him to a nearby shelter.

This story isn't just about one lucky cat. It's about people who saw a problem and refused to walk away.

Martinez could have ignored a stray cat at a busy landfill. Murphy could have said it wasn't his job. But they spent their workday orchestrating a careful rescue instead.

"There were so many hands that touched Mike, and there were so many places where things could have gone very badly," Augenstein said. "But things turned out perfectly, and I'm delighted to have him home."

Mike is back where he belongs, probably napping on the new furniture. And somewhere, a group of landfill workers knows they made someone's world a little brighter.
