Catcher's Challenge Wins Free Pizza for 40,000 Reds Fans

Forty thousand Cincinnati Reds fans went wild Tuesday night, but not because their team was winning. They were celebrating free pizza, courtesy of a gutsy challenge from catcher Tyler Stephenson.

The Reds have a beloved tradition with local pizzeria LaRosa's. Every time the team records 11 strikeouts in a home game, everyone in the stands gets a free small pizza.

Heading into the ninth inning against the Colorado Rockies, the Reds had exactly 10 strikeouts. They needed just one more to seal the deal for their fans.

Pitcher Brock Burke threw a 98 mph fastball that clipped the edge of the strike zone. Home plate umpire Carlos Torres called it a ball, and the stadium groaned.

But Stephenson wasn't having it. He tapped the top of his helmet to trigger the new ABS challenge system, which uses automated technology to review close calls.

As the replay appeared on the scoreboard, broadcaster John Sadak captured the tension perfectly. "Stephenson has won one tonight, can he win pizza for those in the stands?" he asked.

The system confirmed what Stephenson knew. Strike three.
