Australian cattle farmers are testing a waterproof rubber mask that fits snugly on their animals' heads, continuously measuring methane gas from their nostrils. The device, called ZELP Sense, sends real-time data straight to a smartphone app, giving farmers hourly updates on their herd's emissions.
The technology solves a problem that's frustrated the livestock industry for years. Cattle and other grazing animals produce more than 10 percent of Australia's total greenhouse gas emissions through digestion, but measuring those emissions accurately has been nearly impossible without expensive lab equipment.
"It gives us for the first time the ability to accurately measure emissions from grazing livestock at a cost that is not prohibitive," said Hayden Montgomery, agriculture program director at Global Methane Hub, the international network that funded the device's development. The mask has already logged more than 20,000 hours of real-world testing.
The device works by positioning a small nozzle above each cow's nostril, sampling the air as the animal breathes. It measures both the concentration of methane and the airflow rate, calculating emissions on a daily or even hourly basis. Cattle can eat and drink normally while wearing it.
For farmers, this means they can finally prove whether their efforts to reduce emissions actually work. Some producers have started adding asparagopsis, a native Australian seaweed, to feed rations after studies showed it could cut methane production. Others are exploring low-methane genetics. Now they'll have data to show if those changes make a difference.

The timing couldn't be better. Food companies worldwide are increasingly interested in sustainable sourcing, and methane has become a central part of that conversation. The livestock industry has long argued that emissions from animals should be measured differently than pollution from fossil fuels, since biological sources behave differently in the atmosphere than coal or gas emissions.
Adam Coffey, deputy chair of Cattle Australia and a Central Queensland farmer, believes this technology will help reshape the discussion. "We know that livestock emissions are categorically different from your car's exhaust, and I think it's well and truly time that recognition was given," he said.
The device represents one piece of powerful emerging technology helping producers make more sustainable decisions while feeding a growing world. Farmers can now track their climate impact with the same ease as checking their phone's step counter.
