Character.AI Turns Classic Books Into Interactive Stories

Reading Pride and Prejudice just got a lot more personal.

Character.AI just launched Books, a new feature that transforms classic literature into interactive roleplay experiences where you become part of the story. Instead of passively reading Jane Austen or Lewis Carroll, you can now step into Wonderland as Alice herself or create your own character to navigate Netherfield Ball.

The feature arrives as Character.AI works to rebuild trust after facing lawsuits over chatbot interactions that allegedly harmed teenagers. The company shut down open-ended chat for minors last year and pivoted toward more structured experiences.

Books launches with over 20 public domain classics from Project Gutenberg, including Dracula, Frankenstein, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby. Each title offers multiple ways to play, giving readers control over how closely they want to follow the original narrative.

The "book arc mode" keeps you faithful to the classic plot while weaving your character into key moments. Want more freedom? The "off-script mode" lets you interact with characters and settings however you choose, potentially changing how the story unfolds.

Character.AI plans to add TapTale soon, a guided option with pre-written prompts for users who want storytelling guardrails without typing everything from scratch.

The Bright Side

The most creative feature might be alternative universe remixes. Users can completely reimagine a book's premise, turning The Wizard of Oz into a story where Toto calls the shots or transforming Alice's adventures into a space-set romantic comedy. These remixes can be shared with other users, creating a growing library of creative reinterpretations.

The feature works on both Character.AI's mobile app and its web-based Labs hub. Free users get limited turns to try it out, while subscribers enjoy unlimited access to step inside their favorite stories.
