Charlotte Airport Helps Travelers in 29 Languages

✨ Faith Restored

Nearly 950 airport employees at Charlotte Douglas International Airport now wear "I Speak" buttons to help travelers who need support in their native language. The program launched last July after surveys revealed a communication gap with international passengers.

Imagine landing in a busy airport thousands of miles from home, unable to read the signs or ask for directions in your own language.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport is solving that problem with a simple but powerful idea. Employees who speak languages beyond English now wear bright yellow buttons displaying their language skills, making it easy for travelers to find help when they need it most.

Helen Pan, a senior data analyst at the airport, volunteers her Mandarin language skills during busy travel times. She helps passengers find security checkpoints, navigate terminals, and feel welcome in a new place. "We're able to introduce them and welcome them with a warm heart, with their language that just tells people like, 'Hey, we welcome you here and we hope you enjoy your travels,'" Pan said.

Alice Tinoco Vasquez, a customer service representative, helps Spanish-speaking travelers navigate the airport. She remembers one memorable moment when she helped a wife locate her husband arriving on an international flight. "They didn't have a way to talk to each other or guide each other," Tinoco Vasquez said. "He needed help, and she needed help."

Charlotte Airport Helps Travelers in 29 Languages

The I Speak Initiative started last July with 29 languages after surveys showed many travelers struggled with language barriers. Nearly 950 aviation department employees and partners now wear the distinctive buttons, offering support in Arabic, Japanese, Russian, Hindi, Portuguese, Mandarin, Spanish, and 22 other languages.

Why This Inspires

Pan knows firsthand how overwhelming airports can be for non-English speakers. When she first arrived in the United States ten years ago at Chicago's airport, she wished someone could have helped her in Mandarin. Now she gets to be that person for others.

For Tinoco Vasquez, the best part of volunteering is simple. "The most rewarding part is being the little comfort and peace and the person that is looking to find somebody that can speak their language," she said. She watches travelers' faces transform from worry to relief when they realize help is available in their native tongue.

The airport plans to expand the program next year by adding even more languages to better serve its diverse travelers.

A small button is creating big moments of connection, proving that sometimes the simplest solutions make the biggest difference in helping people feel seen and welcome.
