Chatham-Kent Firefighters Answer 3,545 Calls in 2025

Firefighters across Chatham-Kent had their busiest year on record in 2025, responding to 3,545 emergency calls while quietly working behind the scenes to make homes safer.

The increase from 3,212 calls in 2024 reflects the expanding role firefighters now play in their communities. Beyond fighting fires, crews answered 654 medical emergencies, managed 449 vehicle collisions, and performed 28 vehicle extractions to free trapped drivers and passengers.

Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue also completed 1,273 safety inspections throughout the year. These proactive visits help identify hazards and ensure buildings meet safety standards before anyone gets hurt.

But some of the department's most impactful work happened in living rooms and bedrooms across the municipality. Firefighters installed 492 smoke alarms and 414 carbon monoxide alarms in homes, focusing on vulnerable residents who might not have access to these lifesaving devices.

The alarm installations run through the CHiRP program, which ensures that everyone in Chatham-Kent has functioning detectors regardless of their circumstances. Each installed alarm represents a family that will wake up to warnings instead of flames.

"Throughout 2025 our firefighters continued to demonstrate exceptional professionalism, readiness, and compassion in every response," said Fire Chief Chris Case. The department worked closely with EMS, local police, and other agencies to coordinate emergency responses across the region.

When firefighters install a carbon monoxide detector in a senior's home or inspect a business for fire hazards, they're preventing tragedies that might have required multiple emergency responses.

The 906 alarms installed in 2025 will continue protecting families for years to come. Every smoke detector that goes off at 2 a.m. because of burnt toast is performing exactly as intended, and every family that evacuates safely represents prevention working as it should.
