Saturday Kitchen host Matt Tebbutt is backing a campaign that transforms everyday spending into life-changing meals for hungry kids around the world. The celebrity chef is asking people to skip just one supermarket meal deal and donate the money to Mary's Meals instead.

The charity feeds more than three million children every school day in 16 countries, including South Sudan, Haiti, Lebanon, and Zimbabwe. Started in a Scottish Highlands shed in 2002, Mary's Meals now provides nutritious meals that bring hungry children into classrooms where they can learn and build better futures.

The math is simple and powerful. A £4 donation provides 40 meals to children at school. For an entire school year of daily meals, the cost is just £19.15 per child, working out to 10 pence per meal.

"It's easy to feel a bit helpless when we watch the news and see everything going on in the world," Tebbutt says. "But when I heard about the Meals Deals campaign and the simplicity of it, I loved it and had to get involved."

The campaign hits home when you meet children like Samar, a primary school student in South Sudan. She lives with her mother Medina, who sells homemade cakes to survive. On good days, they eat twice. On bad days, Samar drinks tea in the morning and waits until evening for food.

"When there is not enough food at home, I simply endure the situation," Samar explains. But now she can count on Mary's Meals at school. "I feel happy to come to school every day because I know that I will receive a meal."

In South Sudan, more than 70% of primary school age children are out of school, the highest rate anywhere in the world. Many families face heartbreaking choices between sending kids to work or to class. School meals remove that impossible decision.

The Ripple Effect

Mary's Meals doesn't just fill empty stomachs. The charity's approach creates a chain reaction that lifts entire communities. When children know they'll eat at school, attendance soars. When attendance rises, education becomes possible. When education happens, futures brighten for families trapped in poverty cycles.
