Chelan Wins $75K to Diversify Beyond Seasonal Tourism

Faith Restored

A lakeside Washington town built on tourism just secured $75,000 to create its first economic diversification plan, bringing year-round jobs to a community that relies heavily on seasonal visitors. By 2028, Chelan will have a roadmap to build a stronger economy while keeping the small-town charm locals love.

The City of Chelan, Washington just won $75,000 to build an economy that works all year long, not just when tourists arrive.

The lakeside community of around 4,000 residents has thrived on seasonal tourism for decades, but city leaders know relying on summer visitors alone won't secure their future. The Washington State Community Economic Revitalization Board awarded Chelan the planning grant to develop its first comprehensive Economic Diversification Strategy.

Mayor Erin McCardle says the goal isn't to abandon what makes Chelan special. "Tourism and agriculture will always remain important parts of our community, but this work will help us identify additional economic opportunities that can strengthen our local economy, create family-wage jobs, and support long-term prosperity for future generations," she explained.

The $115,000 project includes a $40,000 local match from the city. Consultants will dig into data on Chelan's workforce, infrastructure, and market conditions to find industries that fit the town's strengths and values.

The strategy will guide city leaders on what investments might attract businesses that offer year-round employment. It builds on infrastructure projects already underway, including new water lines that expand capacity for future development.

City Administrator Laura McAloon says planning now means Chelan can grow thoughtfully. "This project will provide the information and strategy needed to attract investment, support local businesses, and position Chelan for sustainable growth while preserving the qualities that make our community unique."

The city plans to select a consultant in early 2027, with work starting that spring. By 2028, Chelan will have a five-year implementation plan with concrete next steps.

The Ripple Effect

Chelan's approach could offer a model for small tourist towns across America struggling with the same challenge. Seasonal economies create feast-or-famine cycles that make it hard for families to stay year-round, forcing young people to leave for stable work elsewhere.

By identifying industries that complement tourism rather than compete with it, Chelan could create the kind of balanced economy that keeps families rooted. The strategy focuses on community engagement, ensuring residents have a voice in shaping what growth looks like.

Other rural communities watching Chelan's progress might find inspiration in a town choosing to plan its future deliberately rather than simply hoping for the best.

A small lakeside town is proving that you can welcome progress without losing what makes home feel like home.
