Chennai College Offers Free Tuition to Sanitation Workers' Kids
Two daughters of sanitation workers in Chennai just received free admission to their dream college, proving that hard work and the right support can open any door. Thanks to a partnership between Urbaser Sumeet and Ethiraj College for Women, these first-generation learners are getting their shot at higher education.
J. Kanishka scored 420 on her Class 12 exams and dreamed of attending Ethiraj College for Women in Chennai. As the daughter of a conservancy worker and fisherman, she watched her father leave for work at 6 a.m. every day, then head to the sea each evening to secure their future.
Now, through the Edu Bridge Initiative, Kanishka and another student have received free admission to the prestigious college. The program, run by Urbaser Sumeet, a sanitation services company, specifically supports daughters of its workers who are first-generation college students.
Kanishka secured a spot in the BCA program and plans to pursue chartered accountancy. "I want to make my parents proud," she said. "I see them working very hard to secure a good future for us. I want them to have a comfortable life."
V. Bhavana, another worker's daughter, received admission to the B.Com program. She had missed the regular cut-off and couldn't afford the self-financing option. "I really hope to do so much better so that my parents and everyone who supports me are always proud," she said.
The Ripple Effect
The partnership between Urbaser Sumeet and Ethiraj College represents a growing recognition that talent exists everywhere, but opportunity doesn't. College Chairman V.M. Muralidharan emphasized that many students who need support don't lack ability or competence. With over 3,000 students joining the college system, he sees supporting deserving students as a way to give back to society.
Mahmood Sait, CEO of Urbaser Sumeet, said education can transform lives and uplift entire families. The company's investment in its workers' children acknowledges a simple truth: the people who keep our cities clean deserve the same opportunities as everyone else.
For families where no one has attended college before, free tuition removes more than just a financial barrier. It sends a message that their dreams matter and their hard work is seen.
Two young women in Chennai are now one step closer to careers they once only imagined, carrying their families' hopes forward.
