India is finally building its own underwater robots, ending decades of expensive imports for inspecting dams, bridges, and coastlines. Chennai-based Vikra Ocean Tech just raised $1 million to scale up production of deep-sea cameras and robots designed specifically for Indian waters.
For years, India relied on expensive imported machines to inspect what lies beneath its 7,500-kilometer coastline, countless dams, and aging bridges.
Now a Chennai startup is changing that. Vikra Ocean Tech builds underwater robots, autonomous surface vessels, and crawling seabed explorers designed specifically for Indian conditions. Founded in 2019 by Rajeuv Govindan and Rajagurunathan Krishnasamy, the company manufactures everything from cameras to lighting systems to the vehicles themselves.
The technology goes deep. Their camera and lighting systems work at depths of 2,000 meters, where sunlight never reaches and water pressure becomes intense. That's deeper than most coastal inspections require, but it opens doors for offshore exploration and defense applications.
The timing matters because India has hundreds of aging dams and bridges that need regular underwater checks. Right now, that work relies on divers or imported equipment that's slow to service and not built for local conditions. Vikra's machines can do the same job while being easier and cheaper to maintain.

The company just raised $1 million in seed funding, co-led by Finvolve and India Accelerator. The money will help scale manufacturing and build sales pipelines with defense agencies and public sector organizations. Before this round, Vikra won two grants from India's Ministry of Defence to develop systems for the Indian Army and Coast Guard.

Beyond defense, these robots serve environmental research, aquaculture, disaster response, and hydrographic surveys. One control platform runs all their different machines, so operators don't need to learn separate systems for each task. That design choice makes the technology more accessible to organizations that can't afford specialized training for multiple pieces of equipment.
The startup represents a broader shift in India's approach to marine technology. As investors noted, subsea robotics is becoming a strategic priority across defense, infrastructure, and emergency response. Building these capabilities domestically means faster deployment, easier maintenance, and systems designed for India's specific underwater environments.
India's push for indigenous manufacturing meets real need here. Every dam inspection, every coastal survey, and every bridge check that used to require imported gear can now support a local company while getting equipment that's actually built for these waters.
