Chennai Teen Becomes Asia's Youngest Solo Glider Pilot at 14

Two days after turning 14, Abhinav Sujith lifted off alone in a sailplane over Kent, UK, making history as Asia's youngest solo glider pilot.

The dream started eight years earlier on a beach near Chennai. A short paraglider ride along East Coast Road left young Abhinav mesmerized, and he told the pilot he wanted to fly higher to see the clouds.

That moment changed everything. Back home, Abhinav would spend hours watching aviation videos and documentaries, trying to understand how aircraft stayed in the air without falling.

When his family moved from Chennai to the UK in November 2021, new opportunities opened up. His father Sujith Sankar found a local gliding club in Kent, and a trial flight in a two-seater sailplane hooked Abhinav immediately.

Gliding is flying without an engine. Pilots use rising air currents called thermals to stay aloft, requiring careful observation of the sky and split-second decisions to maintain altitude.

For three years, Abhinav dedicated every weekend to training. Mornings were spent preparing sailplanes and studying weather patterns, afternoons practicing maneuvers, and evenings reviewing what went right and wrong.

The training wasn't easy. During one early flight, a rope broke during launch, forcing an emergency landing. Abhinav stayed calm and focused, a moment that deepened his commitment to mastering the sport.

His instructor Gavin noticed something special. "Most children are restless, but he asked intelligent questions and absorbed every detail," Gavin recalls. The maturity and patience Abhinav showed set him apart from typical students.

School remained the priority throughout. Now in Class 9, Abhinav balances academics during the week with flying on weekends, proving dedication doesn't require sacrificing education.

On October 6, 2025, just after his 14th birthday, Abhinav was cleared for solo flight. In the UK, 14 is the minimum age for flying a glider alone, provided training requirements are met.
