Chile Cement Plant Now Runs on 100% Renewable Energy

One of Chile's largest cement plants just flipped the switch to 100% renewable energy, marking a major win in the fight to clean up one of the world's dirtiest industries.

Cemento Polpaico partnered with Colbún, Chile's third-largest power generator, to build the country's biggest private solar park at their Cerro Blanco plant near Santiago. The sprawling 30-acre facility now powers cement production entirely through sunshine and renewable contracts.

The solar park houses 15,000 cutting-edge bifacial panels that capture sunlight from both sides, generating enough electricity each year to power 3,000 homes. That clean energy covers about 12% of the cement plant's massive electricity needs, with the rest supplied through renewable energy contracts with Colbún.

Cement production typically ranks among the most carbon-intensive industrial processes on the planet. This plant's transformation prevents roughly 1,476 tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere annually, equivalent to taking hundreds of cars off the road.

Felipe Ureta, who manages the division, says the solar park represents just one piece of a broader sustainability puzzle. The company is also tackling waste through co-processing initiatives and conserving water in their operations.

The Ripple Effect

Colbún's commitment extends far beyond this single partnership. Since 2018, the power generator has slashed its own CO2 emissions by 41%, crushing its original 30% reduction goal.

The company now helps its customers avoid more than 1.6 million tons of CO2 emissions annually through renewable energy operations. That's the climate equivalent of planting millions of trees or removing entire cities' worth of pollution.

This project sends a powerful message to heavy industries worldwide: going green isn't just possible, it's profitable and practical. If cement plants can make the switch, any factory can.
