Chile Doubles Battery Storage to Power 2GW of Clean Energy
A renewable energy giant just doubled down on Chile's clean energy future, adding massive battery storage that will keep solar power flowing long after sunset. The expansion marks a turning point for grid stability across South America.
Chile's Atacama Desert is about to become home to one of the world's largest clean energy storage systems, and it's going to change how an entire country powers itself.
ACCIONA Energía announced it will build a second giant battery system in Chile, doubling its energy storage plans to 2 gigawatt-hours. That's enough capacity to power hundreds of thousands of homes with clean energy even when the sun isn't shining.
The new 196-megawatt battery will connect to the El Romero solar plant in the Atacama Desert, storing sunshine during the day and releasing it for five straight hours whenever the grid needs it most. Construction wraps up by late 2027.
This follows another 1-gigawatt-hour battery project ACCIONA announced last year at the Malgarida solar complex, which is already under construction. Together, these systems solve one of renewable energy's biggest challenges: making solar and wind power available around the clock.
Chile has embraced renewable energy faster than most countries, but storing that energy has been the missing piece. Batteries let the country capture abundant desert sunshine and coastal winds, then deliver that power during evening peaks when families come home and turn on lights and appliances.

ACCIONA already operates nearly 1,000 megawatts of wind and solar across Chile. The company runs three wind farms and four solar plants throughout the country, all feeding 100% renewable electricity into the grid.
The Ripple Effect
These battery projects do more than store energy. They stabilize Chile's entire electrical grid by smoothing out the natural ups and downs of renewable power. That means fewer blackouts and more reliable electricity for homes and businesses.
The technology also proves that countries can run on clean energy without sacrificing reliability. As other nations watch Chile's success, they're gaining confidence to make similar investments in their own renewable transitions.
Battery storage systems like these are dropping in price every year, making them increasingly practical for countries across Latin America and beyond. What starts as two projects in Chile's desert could spark a continent-wide shift toward reliable, affordable clean energy.
Chile is showing the world that the future of electricity isn't just about generating renewable power, it's about storing it smart.
