Chile Energy Firm Launches 7 Clean Projects in 90 Days

Chile just witnessed a renewable energy sprint that's rewriting what's possible in clean power development.

ENGIE Chile activated seven major renewable energy projects in just 90 days, adding enough clean electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes. The projects span from the northern Arica region down to Ñuble, covering over 1,000 miles of Chilean territory.

The portfolio includes solar farms, wind turbines, and battery storage systems that total 1.1 gigawatts of new renewable capacity. One standout is the Chequenes Wind Farm, featuring the tallest wind turbines in Latin America. Another is Libélula, a 350-megawatt solar and battery hybrid project near Santiago that's expected to go fully commercial later this year.

The battery storage systems represent a particularly smart piece of the puzzle. ENGIE is converting old coal plant infrastructure into clean energy hubs, transforming sites that once burned fossil fuels into facilities that store solar and wind power for when it's needed most.

The company invested $1.3 billion across all seven projects. CEO Juan Villavicencio credited the record speed to years of planning and coordination between employees, contractors, and suppliers working with a shared purpose.

The Ripple Effect

This rapid buildout is changing Chile's entire energy landscape. When all current projects go commercial in early 2027, ENGIE Chile will have 2.6 gigawatts of renewable capacity, representing 70% of the company's total power generation.

That's a stunning reversal from 2018, when renewables made up just 1% of their portfolio. Today, more than half their capacity comes from clean sources, with wind, solar, hydro, and battery storage replacing coal-fired generation.

The transformation includes wind power across 652 megawatts, solar installations at 445 megawatts, hydroelectric generation at 46 megawatts, and battery storage systems totaling 386 megawatts. The company also strengthened transmission infrastructure, completing the Totihue Substation to ensure the grid can handle the clean energy influx.

Chile's energy future is being built right now, one wind turbine and solar panel at a time, proving that ambitious climate action doesn't have to take decades.
