Chile Hits 500 MW in Rooftop Solar, 42,000 Homes Join In
Chile just crossed a major milestone with over 500 megawatts of solar power coming from homes and businesses generating their own clean energy. Nearly 42,000 installations prove everyday people are driving the country's renewable revolution.
Chile's solar revolution isn't coming from massive desert farms alone. It's happening on rooftops across the country, one household and business at a time.
As of May 2026, Chile reached 502.9 megawatts of solar capacity under its Net Billing program, which lets people generate their own electricity and sell excess power back to the grid. That's enough to power roughly 250,000 homes, all coming from everyday Chileans taking energy into their own hands.
The numbers tell an inspiring story. Since 2015, 41,986 installations have connected to the grid, with 41,962 of them using solar panels. This year alone through May, another 3,913 systems came online, adding 56.1 megawatts of new clean energy capacity.
The Metropolitan Region around Santiago leads the charge with 14,723 installations and 146.3 megawatts of capacity. But the momentum spreads nationwide, from Valparaíso's coastal communities to the agricultural heartland of Maule and O'Higgins.
What makes this movement truly democratic is its scale diversity. While the largest systems fall in the 200-300 kilowatt range, the vast majority are small household installations. Over 38,000 systems are tiny setups of 10 kilowatts or less, perfect for a single family home.

Farmers are leading the adoption charge, accounting for 208.3 megawatts of capacity. They're cutting electricity costs while reducing their carbon footprint. Residential users follow with 124.5 megawatts, then industrial and commercial operations.
The program shows steady growth too. January saw the biggest monthly jump with 14.6 megawatts added, followed by strong months in March and May. Private investment dominates, with 421.1 megawatts coming from individuals and businesses putting their own money into clean energy.
The Ripple Effect
Every rooftop panel represents a family or business owner who looked at their electricity bill and chose a cleaner future. These aren't grand government projects or corporate initiatives. They're barbers and farmers, apartment buildings and corner stores, all contributing to Chile's renewable energy transformation.
Together, these 42,000 decisions are reshaping how an entire nation powers itself. When people see their neighbors saving money and helping the planet, they want in too. That's how real change happens.
Chile's renewable future is being built one rooftop at a time, proving that massive environmental progress starts with individual action.
