Chile Hits Major Solar Milestone: 12 GW of Clean Energy

Chile's electricity grid just hit a historic milestone that signals a bright future for clean energy in South America.

As of May 2026, renewable sources now generate 52% of Chile's total power capacity, with solar panels alone accounting for over 12,000 megawatts of clean electricity. That's enough solar power to supply millions of homes without burning a single ounce of fossil fuel.

The transformation has been swift and impressive. Solar photovoltaic installations represent 61% of all renewable capacity in the country, making Chile a global leader in harnessing the power of its famously sunny northern deserts. Wind farms contribute another 6,310 megawatts, while geothermal, biomass, and small hydro projects round out the clean energy mix.

The momentum isn't slowing down either. Chile currently has 185 renewable projects under construction, with solar accounting for 90% of that pipeline. When completed, these projects will add another 4,176 megawatts of clean power to the grid.

What makes this especially encouraging is how ordinary Chileans are joining the solar revolution at home. Nearly 42,000 households and businesses have installed rooftop solar systems that let them generate their own electricity and sell the surplus back to the grid. The Metropolitan region around Santiago leads with over 145,000 kilowatts of distributed solar capacity.

April's generation numbers show the real-world impact of this shift. Nearly half of all electricity generated that month came from renewable sources, with solar panels contributing the lion's share at 1,825 gigawatt-hours.

The Ripple Effect

Chile's solar success story sends a powerful message to other nations, especially those in sun-rich regions. The country has proven that transitioning to clean energy isn't just environmentally responsible but economically viable and scalable.

Investment dollars are following the momentum. The Environmental Assessment Service is currently reviewing 86 renewable projects worth $44 billion, showing that private capital sees a profitable future in Chilean clean energy. Many of these projects include battery storage systems, addressing one of solar power's biggest challenges by storing sunshine for cloudy days and nighttime use.

For a country that imports most of its fossil fuels, generating power from its abundant sunshine represents both energy independence and economic security. Every megawatt of solar capacity means less money flowing out of the country and more stable electricity prices for Chilean families and businesses.
