Chile Now Powers 31% of Its Grid With Solar Energy
Chile added over 1,100 megawatts of solar panels in 2025, pushing solar to generate nearly one-third of the nation's electricity. The South American country now runs more than half its power grid on renewable energy.
Chile just hit a major clean energy milestone that shows how quickly countries can transform their power systems when they commit to renewables.
The country installed 1,127 megawatts of solar capacity in 2025, bringing its total solar power to 11,634 megawatts. That's enough to now generate 31.1% of Chile's entire electricity supply from sunshine alone.
Even more impressive: renewable energy sources now produce 50.8% of all electricity in Chile. Wind power adds another 15.7% to the mix, meaning clean energy has crossed the halfway mark in this nation of 19 million people.
The numbers get even brighter when you look ahead. Chile currently has 4,153 megawatts of renewable projects under construction, scheduled to come online by June 2027. Another 89 clean energy projects are waiting for environmental approval, including 67 solar farms, 20 wind installations, and two small hydroelectric plants.
If all those projects get built, they'll add 10,511 megawatts of new renewable capacity with $26.5 billion in investment. That would nearly double Chile's current solar capacity.

The Ripple Effect
Chile's renewable energy boom creates benefits far beyond cleaner air. The country sits in one of the world's sunniest regions, with the Atacama Desert receiving some of the most intense solar radiation on Earth. By harnessing that natural advantage, Chile is building energy independence while creating thousands of construction and maintenance jobs.
The transformation also positions Chile as a clean energy leader in Latin America. Other countries in the region are watching closely and following similar paths toward renewable power.
Perhaps most importantly, Chile proves that rapid energy transitions are possible without sacrificing reliability. The country continues meeting all its power needs while steadily reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Just five years ago, solar generated a fraction of Chile's electricity. Today it powers nearly one in three homes and businesses. That kind of progress shows what's achievable when renewable energy becomes a national priority backed by serious investment.
Chile's sunny future is getting brighter every year.
