Chile Plans Up to 58 GW of New Solar Power by 2057

Chile just unveiled one of Latin America's most ambitious solar energy roadmaps, and it could transform how an entire nation powers its future.

The country's Ministry of Energy released its Long-Term Energy Planning report projecting between 27 and 58 gigawatts of new solar installations by 2057. That's enough clean energy to power tens of millions of homes, all from sunshine.

The plan builds on Chile's existing 12,015 megawatts of solar capacity already humming across the nation. Northern Chile will see the bulk of new solar farms, while wind turbines will sprout across central and southern regions like Maule and Biobío.

What makes this plan special is how it pairs solar panels with battery storage systems. Chile already has over 4,000 megawatts of battery capacity installed or under construction, mostly concentrated in the sunny northern regions of Antofagasta, Atacama, and Tarapacá.

Those batteries solve solar power's biggest challenge: storing sunshine for nighttime use. New battery systems will store energy for six to eight hours, letting Chileans cook dinner and watch TV on solar power long after sunset.

The Ripple Effect

The renewable energy boom will create thousands of construction and maintenance jobs across Chile's diverse regions. Communities from the Atacama Desert to Patagonia will benefit from cleaner air as coal plants retire and carbon emissions plummet.

By 2057, at least 83 percent of Chile's electricity will come from solar and wind power. That's a massive shift from fossil fuels to clean energy that protects both public health and the planet.

The plan even explores offshore wind energy for the first time, with turbines potentially spinning in Pacific waters by 2041. Chile is testing every renewable option to build the cleanest possible energy future.

Mining operations and emerging data centers will help drive demand for all this clean electricity. Electric cars, buses, and taxis will increasingly replace gas-guzzling vehicles on Chilean roads, powered by homegrown renewable energy.
