Chile Powers Up One of Its Largest Battery Storage Systems

Chile just took a giant leap toward a cleaner energy future by securing financing for one of the country's largest battery storage systems paired with solar power.

The landmark deal will fund a massive 141 MW battery storage system alongside 19 solar farms stretching from the Atacama Desert to the Biobío Region. Together, these projects will store clean energy when the sun is shining and release it when demand peaks, helping Chile use more renewable power and less fossil fuel generation.

Chile is already a renewable energy success story. The country now generates over 60 percent of its electricity from renewable sources, with solar power alone accounting for more than 30 percent of total capacity. That's remarkable progress for a nation that was still heavily dependent on coal just a few years ago.

But success brought a new challenge. In 2025, Chile had to waste about 5 TWh of solar and wind power because there was nowhere to store it when production exceeded demand. That's like throwing away 15 percent of the clean energy the country generated.

This new battery system solves that problem. By storing excess renewable energy during sunny days, the batteries ensure that clean power stays available when clouds roll in or the sun sets. The project will help stabilize Chile's electrical grid while reducing the need for backup power from carbon-intensive sources.

Energy consulting firm DNV helped secure the financing by analyzing market conditions and demonstrating the project's long-term viability to international lenders. Their work proved that combining battery storage with diverse solar assets across multiple regions creates a reliable, bankable investment.

The Ripple Effect

Chile's rapid transition shows other developing nations what's possible. The country introduced Latin America's first carbon tax in 2017 and is now phasing out coal faster than any other developing economy. By proving that large-scale battery storage works financially and technically, Chile is creating a blueprint that other countries can follow.

The battery system represents the next critical step in Chile's journey toward net-zero emissions by 2050. As more countries struggle with how to store renewable energy effectively, Chile is showing that the technology and financing models exist today.
