Chile Secures $457M for Massive Solar and Battery Project
Spain's Grenergy just locked in nearly half a billion dollars to build game-changing clean energy storage in Chile's Atacama Desert. The project will power hundreds of thousands of homes with sunshine, even after dark.
A Spanish renewable energy company has secured $457 million to build one of South America's largest solar and battery storage projects in Chile, marking a major step forward in reliable clean energy.
Grenergy's new funding will power two key projects in Chile's sun-drenched Atacama region. The Algarrobal facility will combine 242 megawatts of solar panels with massive batteries that can store 1.5 gigawatt-hours of energy. That's enough to power roughly 150,000 homes for five hours after sunset.
The financing package also covers 21 smaller solar farms called the Palmas cluster, spread across northern and central Chile. These projects are already operational and generating clean electricity today. Six of them are now getting battery upgrades to store power for times when the sun isn't shining.
Six major international banks came together to make this happen, including BNP Paribas, BBVA, JPMorgan Chase, and Santander. Their confidence in the project shows how mainstream solar plus storage technology has become.
The Algarrobal project already has a buyer lined up through a 12-year agreement to deliver 350 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually starting in 2028. Construction crews are racing to have everything ready by late 2027.

The Ripple Effect
This deal pushes Grenergy past $2.4 billion in clean energy financing in Chile alone. The company is building an energy infrastructure that will reduce carbon emissions for decades while creating hundreds of construction and maintenance jobs.
Chile's combination of intense sunlight and forward-thinking energy policies is making it a global leader in renewable power. The country is proving that developing nations don't have to choose between economic growth and environmental protection.
Battery storage solves solar power's biggest challenge: what happens when clouds roll in or night falls. These massive batteries capture excess sunshine during the day and release it exactly when families need it most.
Grenergy isn't stopping in South America. The company is replicating this solar-plus-storage model in Spain and Portugal, with plans for 1 gigawatt of solar capacity paired with 3.2 gigawatt-hours of batteries across the Iberian Peninsula.
The financing represents nearly 40% of Grenergy's three-year strategic plan for project funding. That means more clean energy projects are coming soon.
Chile is showing the world how to build an energy system that's both cleaner and more reliable than what came before.
