Chile Targets 100% Renewable Energy Peak by 2030
Chile just unveiled an ambitious roadmap to hit 100% renewable energy peaks by 2030, building on its current 84% record. The plan tackles major grid challenges while doubling down on solar power and community energy projects.
Chile is racing toward a renewable energy milestone that seemed impossible just years ago, and the finish line is now in sight.
The Chilean government launched its Energy Roadmap 2026-2030 this week, setting a bold target to reach 100% renewable energy peaks in its national grid by decade's end. The country has already hit 84.4% renewable peaks in 2025, with nearly two-thirds of annual electricity now coming from clean sources.
But success has created growing pains. Over 6,000 gigawatt hours of renewable energy went to waste in 2025 because transmission lines couldn't handle the surge, especially in northern regions where solar farms flourish under relentless sun.
Energy Minister Ximena Rincón framed the challenge simply during the roadmap presentation. "Without energy, there is no development," she said, emphasizing that reliable power enables better lives, stronger security, and a just transition to sustainability.
The government's solution involves overhauling how electricity moves across the country. Chile will reform its transmission tariff system to reduce congestion and fast-track critical infrastructure projects that can actually deliver all that renewable power where it's needed.

Storage becomes essential as coal plants retire. These older facilities provided grid stability that renewable sources must now replace through battery systems and emerging technologies like geothermal power.
Chile is also bringing clean energy directly to communities. The roadmap aims to double distributed solar capacity to 1 gigawatt by 2030, up from 498 megawatts today under the country's Net Billing program.
That growth is already visible. More than 65,000 homes, businesses, farms, and hospitals have installed rooftop solar systems for self-consumption. Seven new community energy cooperatives will bring shared solar benefits to over 1,000 additional households.
The Ripple Effect
The strategy extends beyond kilowatts and substations. Chile is tackling the red tape that slows renewable projects, where permits currently take over 450 days to approve. A new inter-ministerial committee will prioritize 20 strategic energy projects and cut through bureaucratic delays.
With over 47 billion dollars in energy projects awaiting environmental review, faster approvals could unleash a wave of investment and jobs. Four government agencies signed an integration agreement to improve coordination and data sharing across the energy sector.
Minister Rincón acknowledged the roadmap won't solve everything overnight, but it charts the course to stabilize energy costs, reduce energy poverty, and modernize infrastructure while protecting the environment. Chile is proving that small countries can lead big changes when vision meets action.
