Chile's 1.5TWh Clean Energy Auction Powers Renewable Future

Chile is about to get a massive boost in clean energy supply, and companies are lining up to be part of it.

Spanish power producer Grenergy has opened bidding for 1.5 terawatt hours of annual electricity from its solar and battery storage projects across Chile. That's enough power to supply roughly 300,000 homes for an entire year.

The offering splits into two parts: 960GWh of battery-stored energy for nighttime use and 540GWh of solar power for daytime delivery. Companies can bid on the entire package or break it into smaller 20GWh blocks, with contracts lasting between six and 15 years.

Energy starts flowing in late 2028 from Grenergy's solar farms and battery systems in northern and central Chile. The auction runs through Match Energía's online marketplace, with the registration window closing July 22.

This marks Grenergy's third self-run energy auction since pioneering the approach in Latin America back in 2022. The company is betting big on Chile's renewable future with serious infrastructure behind the promise.

The Ripple Effect

Grenergy's Chilean portfolio tells the story of renewable energy's explosive growth in the region. Its Oasis de Atacama platform already boasts 2.5GW of solar panels and 14GWh of battery storage. The upcoming Oasis Central project will add another 1.4GW of solar capacity and 5.1GWh of storage to central Chile.

The company recently bumped its investment commitment through 2028 to €3.7 billion, with Chile and Europe each claiming about 45% of those funds. The focus centers squarely on pairing solar farms with battery storage, solving renewable energy's biggest challenge: keeping the lights on after sunset.

Grenergy aims to hit 5GW of installed solar capacity by 2026 and expand its battery storage portfolio to 4.1GWh. Across all its global projects at various development stages, the company reports around 12GW of solar capacity in the pipeline.

The auction represents more than just one company's growth strategy. Chile has emerged as a renewable energy powerhouse thanks to its exceptional solar resources in the Atacama Desert and strong government support for clean energy transitions.
