China Adds More Solar Power Than Rest of World in 2025

The world just hit a solar milestone that seemed impossible a decade ago, and one country powered more than half of that achievement.

China added 336 terawatt-hours of new solar generation in 2025. That's more electricity than the combined total of every other nation on Earth, which together added 300 terawatt-hours during the same year.

The numbers come from Ember's Global Electricity Review 2026, which tracks electricity generation worldwide. China alone accounted for 53 percent of all new solar power installed globally in 2025.

This solar surge helped push China past one terawatt of total installed solar capacity. It became the first nation ever to reach that landmark.

The impact extends far beyond China's borders. Solar power supplied roughly 75 percent of the growth in global electricity demand during 2025, helping meet rising energy needs without adding more fossil fuels.

China's solar manufacturing dominance has also driven down costs worldwide. The country produces most of the world's solar components, making panels more affordable for nations everywhere trying to transition to clean energy.

The Ripple Effect

This massive solar expansion contributed to a historic shift in how the world generates power. For the first time in about a century, renewable energy overtook coal in the global electricity mix.

The change didn't happen overnight. It reflects years of investment in solar infrastructure and manufacturing capacity that's now paying dividends for the entire planet.

When renewable sources meet all global power demand growth, it means every new appliance, electric vehicle, and data center can run without burning more coal or gas. That's progress that compounds year after year.
