China Mandates QR Codes on E-Bikes to Boost Safety

China just took a major step toward making electric bicycles safer for millions of riders by requiring every e-bike and its key components to carry a unique, scannable QR code.

Starting March 1, 2026, all newly certified electric bicycles, lithium-ion batteries, chargers, and even helmets sold in China must display a QR code alongside the country's CCC safety certification mark. Products already certified have until March 2027 to comply.

The China Automobile Certification Center announced the reform as part of a broader push to modernize safety standards in the world's largest e-bike market. When regulators scan a product's QR code, they can instantly trace it back to its manufacturer, certification documents, and even the specific production batch.

This digital tracking system addresses a serious problem that has plagued the industry for years. Battery fires in electric two-wheelers have caused recurring safety concerns across China and Asia, prompting regulators to steadily tighten manufacturing standards.

The new system makes it nearly impossible for counterfeit products to slip through. Fake safety certification labels, which have appeared on e-bikes even in the United States, become much harder to pass off as legitimate when each code links to verified records.

For consumers, the change means greater confidence that the e-bike they buy meets genuine safety standards. If a recall becomes necessary, manufacturers can now target specific batches instead of issuing broad, uncertain warnings.
