China Restores Taiwan Flights and Trade After Peace Talks

After years of rising tensions, China is reopening doors to Taiwan with restored flights and lifted trade restrictions.

Following a Friday meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Taiwan opposition leader Cheng Li-wun, Beijing announced Sunday it would resume direct flights to mainland cities and allow imports of Taiwanese seafood products that had been banned since 2021. The two leaders called for peace during their high-profile discussion in Beijing.

China will restart flights between Taiwan and cities like Xi'an and Urumqi. The nation also plans to facilitate imports of grouper fish, squid, and tuna that were previously blocked, affecting Taiwanese fisheries for nearly five years.

The announcement follows talks between Xi and Cheng, who leads Taiwan's Kuomintang Party. China's Communist Party said it would explore creating a lasting communication channel between the two political parties.

Taiwan and China have been separated since 1949, and relations grew especially tense after 2016. China had cut most official dialogue and regularly sent warships and fighter jets near the island.

The Bright Side

While Taiwan's government cautions that these measures bypass official channels, the renewed connections offer practical benefits for everyday people. Taiwanese fisheries could regain access to a major market, and direct flights would make family visits and business travel easier for millions.

The proposed bridge connecting Taiwan's Kinmen and Matsu islands to mainland China, though a longstanding idea, represents thinking beyond conflict toward shared infrastructure.

Even small openings between nations that have faced decades of division signal that dialogue remains possible. When leaders from opposing sides choose conversation over confrontation, they create space for ordinary citizens to reconnect.

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council emphasized that true protection of people's rights requires government-to-government negotiations on equal terms. The path forward remains uncertain, but Sunday's announcement proves that frozen relationships can thaw.

After years of increasing military posturing and economic restrictions, even limited cooperation shows that progress doesn't require perfect agreement.
