China's Clean Energy Now Replacing Coal, Not Just Adding to It

China just hit a turning point that energy experts have been waiting decades to see: clean power is finally replacing coal, not just piling on top of it.

Coal generation dropped 0.7% across China in 2025 even as electricity demand jumped 5%, according to new data from energy think tank Ember. In 17 of 26 provinces analyzed, including industrial powerhouses like Shandong and Hunan, coal has stopped growing entirely.

This marks a massive shift from how things usually work. For years, China built solar panels and wind turbines while also burning more coal to keep up with its economy's endless hunger for power. Now the clean stuff is growing so fast it's covering new demand and starting to kick coal out.

Battery storage is making the magic happen. Batteries overtook pumped hydro as China's largest energy storage source in late 2024, then nearly doubled again in 2025. They're smoothing out the ups and downs of solar and wind power, making clean electricity reliable enough to depend on.

The shift goes way beyond power plants. Fossil fuel use has already peaked in eight of 11 industrial sectors tracked by Ember, mostly since 2018. Factories that make food, beverages, and transport equipment have slashed fossil fuel use by 26% to 71% while still cranking out more products per person.

Electric vehicles are speeding up the transformation. EVs hit 67% of new car sales in June 2026, and electric trucks more than doubled their market share two years running. Nine out of every 10 electric trucks sold worldwide last year were sold in China.

The Ripple Effect

China's energy turnaround matters far beyond its borders. The country drove half of global oil demand growth and more than 90% of coal demand growth since 2000. If China stops climbing, fossil fuel producers lose their biggest growth story.

The shift is already reducing China's reliance on imported oil, which makes up over 70% of what it uses. EVs alone displaced 400,000 barrels of daily gasoline demand in 2024, with total electrification avoiding at least 1 million barrels per day.

China is now exporting the technology driving this change. Clean tech exports topped $220 billion in 2025 and grew from 2.7% of all exports in 2020 to 6.6% in early 2026. Countries that once supplied China's coal and oil boom are now buying Chinese solar panels, batteries, and EVs.

China's government plans for oil and coal use to peak by 2030, but the data suggests it's happening now. Electricity already supplies 29% of China's final energy consumption, compared to 23% in Europe and 21% in the United States.

The transition isn't happening evenly everywhere, and China still burns enormous amounts of coal. But the pattern is spreading province by province and sector by sector: clean energy isn't just growing anymore, it's taking over.
