China's Clean Energy Now Tops Coal and Gas Power

China just crossed a threshold that seemed impossible a decade ago. Solar and wind power now make up nearly half of the nation's total electricity capacity, officially surpassing traditional coal and gas plants for the first time in history.

The numbers tell an incredible story. China added 430 million kilowatts of new solar and wind capacity in 2025 alone, a 22% jump from the year before. That brought the country's total renewable capacity to 1.84 billion kilowatts, representing 47.3% of all power infrastructure.

To put that in perspective, China installed more clean energy in one year than most countries have built in total. The scale is staggering, but the implications reach far beyond impressive statistics.

Liu Deshun, chief engineer at China's National Energy Administration, announced plans to accelerate energy storage development in 2026. Storage technology solves the intermittency problem, allowing solar power collected at noon to light homes at midnight.

The government aims even higher for the future. By 2035, China plans to establish a power system capable of running primarily on renewable energy, with advanced systems to balance supply and demand.

The Ripple Effect

This milestone matters far beyond China's borders. When the world's largest coal consumer pivots decisively to clean energy, it transforms global markets and proves that massive energy transitions are achievable, not theoretical.

China's manufacturing scale has already driven down solar panel costs by 90% over the past decade, making renewable energy the cheapest option in most of the world. As the country builds more clean infrastructure, those cost reductions continue, helping every nation afford the transition.

The shift also demonstrates that economic growth and environmental progress aren't enemies. China's economy continues expanding while its carbon emissions from electricity begin declining, debunking the false choice between prosperity and sustainability.

Other major economies are watching closely and accelerating their own transitions. When the world's manufacturing powerhouse runs on sunshine and wind, it proves the technology works at scale.
