China's Energy Goes 52% Renewable, Grid Grows 11X in 25 Years

China's electricity transformation just hit a turning point that most countries only dream about. In 2025, more than half of the nation's power generation came from clean sources like solar, wind, and hydropower, while total electricity use crossed 10 trillion kilowatt-hours for the first time ever.

The numbers tell a remarkable story. Coal-fired power plants made up 74% of China's grid in 2000. By 2025, that figure dropped to just under 40% as renewable energy took over the majority share at 52.4%.

The shift is happening fastest where it matters most for the future. High-tech manufacturing boosted its electricity use by 6.4% in 2025, while old energy-intensive industries grew just 1.8%. Electric vehicle charging alone jumped nearly 49%, powered by over 20 million charging stations now dotting the country.

The service sector is electrifying even faster. Power consumption in services jumped 8.2% in a single year, driven by data centers, 5G networks, and the rapid buildout of charging infrastructure across cities and highways.

China's total power capacity reached 3.89 billion kilowatts in 2025, roughly 11 times what it was 25 years earlier. This massive expansion came alongside the dramatic cleanup of the energy mix, proving that growth and sustainability can happen together.

Geography created a unique challenge. The best wind, solar, and hydropower resources sit in the sparsely populated northwest, while factories and cities cluster thousands of kilometers away along the southeast coast.

The solution came in the form of "electricity expressways." Since 2009, China built 46 ultra-high-voltage transmission lines that move massive amounts of clean power across vast distances with minimal loss. These lines now shuttle renewable energy from the windy, sunny west to the hungry industrial east.

The Ripple Effect

The transformation is reshaping entire regions. Inner Mongolia, once known mainly for coal, now hosts booming wind and solar farms alongside data centers that consume the clean power locally. Provinces like Henan, Hebei, Sichuan, and Anhui are attracting electric vehicle plants and solar panel factories, spreading green jobs beyond the traditional coastal hubs.

By 2030, experts project China's electricity use will hit 13 trillion kilowatt-hours, with renewables continuing to grab market share. The country's electrification rate should reach 35%, running 8 to 10 percentage points higher than the average among wealthy OECD nations.

The scale is staggering. China now uses more electricity than the European Union, Russia, India, and Japan combined. But unlike decades past, that growing appetite is increasingly satisfied by the wind, sun, and flowing water instead of burning coal.

What took a generation to build is now accelerating even faster, proving that the world's largest energy consumer can also lead the race toward clean power.
