Life raft spotted in dark ocean waters during midnight rescue operation off Queensland coast

Chinese Crew Rescues Two Fishermen and Dog Off Queensland

🦸 Hero Alert

When their fishing boat sank 139 kilometers off the Queensland coast, two men and their dog Smokey faced a terrifying night at sea. A Chinese bulk carrier turned back to save them, proving that compassion knows no borders.

A routine coal shipment turned into a midnight rescue mission when a Chinese bulk carrier saved two fishermen and their dog from the dark waters off North Queensland.

The drama began last night when an emergency beacon activated 139 kilometers northeast of Airlie Beach. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority detected the signal from the fishing vessel Santa Monica and immediately launched a rescue aircraft from Melbourne.

By midnight, the Challenger jet had located a tiny life raft bobbing in the ocean. Two exhausted men and a dog named Smokey huddled inside, watching their 9-meter boat disappear beneath the waves.

The Flourish Power, a Chinese bulk carrier loaded with coal from Hay Point, received the distress call. Captain and crew didn't think twice. They turned the massive ship around and headed straight for the coordinates.

Glenn Saldanha, a reef pilot with almost 45 years of experience, was preparing to leave the ship when the rescue began. Instead of catching his scheduled helicopter home, he stayed to help navigate through the treacherous Great Barrier Reef waters to reach the stranded sailors.

"It's just the law of the sea that you look after everybody else there and the nationality doesn't even come into it," Saldanha said.

The ship reached the life raft at 1:15am, guided by flares from the fishermen. Three crew members from the Flourish Power launched a small rescue boat into the dark night, not knowing what they'd face. By 2:30am, both men and Smokey were safely aboard.

"I've been at sea almost 45 years, but while we train for this, we don't actually do it in real life," Saldanha said. "The real bravery was the three blokes who went out in that small rescue boat."

Sunny's Take

The rescued fishermen were exhausted but alive, realizing just how close they'd come to disaster. At 7:30am, Saldanha flew them and Smokey back to Mackay by helicopter.

What happened on the tarmac brought tears to the veteran pilot's eyes. The fishermen's parents rushed forward, wrapping their sons in tight embraces. They turned to hug Saldanha too, overcome with gratitude.

"Seeing the relief and joy on their parents' faces when we landed and the hugs I received from them will be, for me, the lasting memory," Saldanha said. "You're proud to be an Aussie on a day like this."

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority reminded boat owners to keep emergency beacons registered and maintained, crediting the quick response to the activated beacon.

Three nations, one rescue, zero hesitation.
