Church volunteers loading flower arrangements into cars for Valentine's Day delivery fundraiser

Church Volunteers Deliver Flowers to Fund Camp for 100 Kids

✨ Faith Restored

A Missouri church turned Valentine's Day into a fundraising mission, with volunteers delivering hundreds of flower orders to send 100 students to summer camp. The creative partnership between Allen's Flowers and Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church shows how communities can transform busy holidays into opportunities for youth.

Six carloads of volunteers spent Valentine's Day weekend delivering roses and bouquets across Columbia, Missouri, with every delivery bringing 100 students closer to summer camp. Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church in Hatton partnered with Allen's Flowers to turn one of the busiest florist weekends into a youth fundraiser.

The church needs to raise over $20,000 to send all 100 junior high and high school students to a week-long camp at Central Methodist University in Fayette. At roughly $200 per student, plus buses and drivers, that's a serious goal that requires creative thinking.

"This year we have 100 students going, and it's the most that we've ever had going from our church," said Becky Stevens, a church member. The volunteers worked all day Friday before Valentine's Day and through the holiday itself, delivering hundreds of arrangements.

Allen's Flowers manager Tina Bradley saw the partnership as a perfect fit during their busiest season. "I tell a lot of our customers when they are paying for the delivery what it goes to, so they realize that their delivery charge is going to kids to go to church camp," Bradley said. Customers consistently responded with big smiles.

The timing couldn't be better. Americans spent an estimated $29.1 billion on Valentine's Day this year, according to the National Retail Federation, with florists stocking up on 250 million roses nationwide.

The Ripple Effect

This fundraiser represents just one of four or five major efforts the church organizes throughout the year to ensure every student can attend camp regardless of financial circumstances. "Every group of our church wants to help all the teens have the same opportunity," Stevens explained.

The impact extends beyond a single week at camp. Students return with stories and experiences that shape their growth, creating a tradition that brings the entire church community together in support.

"It brings the kids joy, they love going to camp and come back telling us all of the exciting stories," Bradley said. "But it gives us joy to go out in the community and help them earn the money to be able to go."

The volunteer delivery team proves that with a little creativity, even the busiest commercial holidays can become opportunities to invest in young people's futures.
