Circleville Student Wins Scholarship After 20 Years of Giving

A Circleville High School senior who captained two sports teams while leading multiple clubs and volunteering across his community just received recognition that will help launch his college career.

Hudson James Phalin was awarded the 2026 Gerhardt Family Scholarship at Circleville High School's Day of Excellence on May 12. The honor comes with financial support as he heads to Ohio University-Athens to study sports medicine this fall.

Hudson's resume reads like a masterclass in showing up. He captained both the varsity football and baseball teams while serving as Key Club President and Tigers Together Club Vice President. He balanced athletics with National Honor Society membership, Student Council, and work as a Tiger Broadcasting student.

But his impact extended far beyond the school walls. Hudson volunteered at teacher appreciation breakfasts, helped run the Pumpkin Show Kiwanis Booth, assisted with blood drives, and even picked up trash in downtown Circleville on early mornings.

The Gerhardt family created their scholarship program in 2005 to honor students while celebrating their own family's 125 years of contributions to Circleville. Richard Gerhardt presented the award on behalf of three Gerhardt family branches: Richard and Marie, Matt and Cindy, and Charles and Barbara.

The Ripple Effect

This scholarship represents more than financial aid. It connects Hudson to a legacy of community investment that stretches back five generations. The Gerhardts have now supported 37 deserving students over two decades, creating a chain of young people equipped to give back.

Hudson, son of Phil and Beth Phalin, joins a growing network of scholarship recipients who learned early that success means lifting others while climbing. The program evaluates students on academics, service activities, character, need, and special achievements.

For 2027 graduates ready to follow in Hudson's footsteps, applications will be available at the CHS Guidance Office.
