Circus School Students Soar at East Sussex Graduation

Young performers are reaching new heights at a circus school where dreams really do take flight.

East Sussex School of Circus Arts recently celebrated its 2026 graduation at Knockhatch Adventure Park in Hailsham. Students performed aerial pole, trapeze, aerial hoop, hammock, Chinese chair, and other spectacular acts for families and respected judges from across the circus and entertainment industries.

The event wasn't just about entertainment. Industry professionals including Lydia Harper, Artistic Director at Cirque du Soleil currently working on their show OVO, joined the panel to evaluate student performances and present awards.

First-year student Cazimi earned the Best Creativity Performance award for an aerial pole routine. Courtney took home Best Aerial Act for an aerial hoop performance, while Lilimae received Student of the Year honors for a trapeze act.

The Resilience Award went to Imogen, recognizing not just technical skill but the determination circus training demands. These awards celebrate qualities that extend far beyond the ring: creativity, perseverance, and dedication.

The Ripple Effect

The guest judge panel reflected the real career paths available to today's circus students. Alongside Harper from Cirque du Soleil, actor Daniel Fathers attended (known for HBO's House of the Dragon and The Ark). Kenny Darnell Jr., a seventh-generation circus performer who transitioned from aerial silks and Wheel of Death to managing Paulos Circus, showed students that circus skills open diverse doors.

Attila Endresz, another seventh-generation circus artist and ringmaster with over 20 years of UK experience, represented John Lawson's Circus. Mike Taylor, President of the Circus Friends Association, rounded out the panel.

Founded by Renato Pires, ESSCA has built its reputation on professional teaching, rigorous safety standards, and inclusive training for neurodiverse and all-ability students. The school offers pathways from sixth-form college through professional performance careers.

Second-year students performed advanced floor acts including Chinese chair, rolla bolla, and hand canes, demonstrating the progression from foundational skills to performance-ready artistry. Their performances proved that with proper training and support, young people can master disciplines that have captivated audiences for generations.

The next generation of circus artists is training, performing, and preparing to bring wonder to stages worldwide.
