Citizens Bank Ends Ties With Private Prison Companies

A major financial institution is stepping back from the private prison industry after sustained community advocacy brought attention to its business relationships.

Citizens Bank announced it will end its lending partnerships with CoreCivic and GEO Group, two companies that operate immigration detention facilities under federal contracts. The Rhode Island-based bank has worked with CoreCivic since 2011 and GEO Group since 2018.

Activist groups spent months organizing protests and urging customers and municipalities to pressure the bank. Their persistence paid off when Citizens confirmed the decision in a July 17 statement.

The bank said its choice was driven by changing business conditions. Recent federal government plans to purchase detention facilities have reduced the companies' capital needs and shifted their financing requirements.

The Ripple Effect

The decision reflects a growing pattern of financial institutions reconsidering their relationships with controversial industries when communities make their voices heard.

Citizens Bank emphasized its ongoing commitment to immigrant communities. The bank supports 140 nonprofit organizations serving immigrants and provided $2 billion in community development financing for affordable housing and local economic development last year.

The bank's employees logged more than 265,000 volunteer hours and serve on over 1,000 nonprofit boards. These investments demonstrate the institution's broader dedication to community service beyond its lending decisions.

CoreCivic responded that it remains financially strong with diverse financial partnerships. The company has served government partners under both Democratic and Republican administrations for more than 40 years.

The outcome shows how sustained civic engagement can influence corporate decision-making. When communities organize around their values, businesses listen and respond with meaningful changes to their operations.
