Citrus County Needs Volunteers for Meals on Wheels

For isolated seniors in Citrus County, Florida, a knock on the door at lunchtime means more than just a hot meal arriving.

It means someone cares enough to show up.

The Meals on Wheels Program in Citrus County is recruiting volunteer drivers to deliver meals to homebound seniors in the Inverness areas of Gospel Island and The Highlands. The need is urgent, with many seniors currently waiting for service to begin.

The commitment is manageable. Volunteers dedicate just two hours, one day per week, during weekday lunch hours Monday through Friday. Each route includes 10 to 15 stops and typically wraps up within two hours.

Drivers receive mileage reimbursement for their service. More importantly, they become a lifeline for seniors who often look forward to these visits as the highlight of their day.

"With many individuals waiting for assistance, now is the perfect time to step up and make a difference," said Janice Hale, Senior Programs Supervisor. "We are confident there is a route that can fit your schedule."

The impact of meal delivery volunteers extends far beyond nutrition. For many homebound seniors, the daily visitor becomes a trusted friend who notices changes in health or wellbeing. These brief check-ins have prevented medical emergencies and helped seniors maintain independence in their own homes longer.

The program serves seniors throughout Citrus County during weekdays, but the Gospel Island and Highlands routes currently face the greatest shortage. Without enough volunteers, eligible seniors remain on waiting lists, missing both meals and critical social connection.
