Clean Energy Hits 49.5% of Global Capacity in 2025

The world just crossed a milestone that seemed impossible a generation ago: renewable energy now represents 49.5% of all global electricity capacity.

The International Renewable Energy Agency reported that clean energy installations reached 5.2 terawatts by the end of 2025, marking the fastest annual growth in renewable capacity ever recorded. Countries around the globe added 693 gigawatts of solar, wind, hydroelectric, and other renewable sources in a single year.

The numbers tell a story of accelerating change. Renewable electricity generation grew by 9.8% in 2024, while fossil fuel generation barely budged at 1.4% growth. Clean energy now produces 31.7% of the world's electricity, up from just a fraction of that two decades ago.

Asia led the global surge with solar and wind installations that boosted its renewable generation by 14.3%. The Middle East, traditionally an oil and gas stronghold, posted the highest regional growth rate at 17.3%. Even Africa saw gains across nearly all renewable sources, proving that the clean energy transition spans every continent.

Solar and wind power drove most of the expansion, with both technologies becoming cheaper and more efficient each year. Hydroelectric power remained a steady contributor, while emerging sources like biomass and geothermal continued gaining ground.

The Ripple Effect

This shift touches far more than electricity bills. Cleaner air means healthier communities, especially in cities that have suffered under coal pollution for decades. Countries that import fossil fuels are gaining energy independence, keeping more money in local economies. Manufacturing jobs in solar panel and wind turbine production are sprouting in regions that need economic revitalization.

Francesco La Camera, the agency's director general, emphasized that electrification powered by renewables is becoming the backbone of the global energy transition. Buildings, transportation, and industry are all shifting toward clean electricity as their primary energy source.

The challenge ahead remains significant. To meet 2035 climate goals, renewable generation needs to reach 78% of global electricity production, which means multiplying current levels by 2.5. But the momentum is undeniable. What once seemed like a distant dream is now measurable reality, with clean energy winning on both environmental and economic grounds.
