Climber Survives Everest Avalanche, Chases World Record
Australian climber Oliver Foran faced down a massive Mount Everest avalanche and lived to tell the tale. Now he's continuing his climb to break a speed record from sea level to summit.
When Oliver Foran saw a wall of snow "two apartment blocks high" racing toward his tent on Mount Everest, he had seconds to react. The Australian climber and his partner survived the terrifying avalanche at Camp 1, emerging from their half-buried tent to check on fellow climbers.
Foran captured the moment on video, showing massive plumes of snow billowing down the Lho La col before he ducks into his tent and zips it shut. The footage shows the tent violently shaking as the avalanche engulfs everything in its path.
"We'd been hearing these avalanches all night, and normally, they'll go on for a second and then disappear," Foran told ABC News. "But this one didn't. This one just got louder and louder."
After the snow settled, Foran and his climbing partner squeezed out through the top of their collapsed tent. They walked around the camp to make sure everyone else was okay, relieved to find no one was hurt.

Ethan Greene, director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, explained that large powder clouds like the one Foran encountered can be extremely damaging up close. The climbers got lucky with their positioning and quick thinking.
Why This Inspires
Most people would pack up and head home after such a close call with death. Not Foran. He and his team continued their climb, driven by a dream to set the world record for fastest journey from sea level to the summit of Everest.
"Now, to be in a position to actually have the opportunity to climb this beautiful mountain, I just feel so happy and in disbelief to actually be here," Foran said after the incident.
His gratitude and determination shine through despite the danger. Foran acknowledged the mountain's power in his social media post, writing "Mother Nature reminding us who's boss," while expressing relief that everyone stayed safe.
The attempt continues as Foran pushes toward the summit, turning a brush with disaster into motivation to achieve something extraordinary.
