Climber Survives 'Monster' Everest Avalanche, Pursues Record

When Oliver Foran saw a wall of snow two stories high racing toward his tent on Mount Everest, he had seconds to react.

The Australian climber was at Camp 1 when what he calls a "monster avalanche" roared down the Lho La col. Unlike the brief avalanches he'd heard all night, this one just kept getting louder.

Foran's video shows massive plumes of snow billowing toward camp before he ducks into his tent and zips it shut. The footage then captures his tent shaking violently as the avalanche buries him and his climbing partner under snow.

"We got away really lucky," Foran told ABC News after the May 2026 incident.

The two climbers emerged from their half-buried tent through the top opening and immediately checked on other teams. Everyone survived without injury, a remarkable outcome given the avalanche's size.

Ethan Greene, director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, explained that large powder clouds from avalanches are common but can cause serious damage to anyone nearby. The climbers' quick reaction likely saved their lives.

Foran didn't let the close call end his dream. After digging out and confirming everyone's safety, he and his team continued their ascent with a bold goal: setting a new world record for the fastest climb from sea level to Everest's summit.

"Now, to be in a position to actually have the opportunity to climb this beautiful mountain, I just feel so happy and in disbelief to actually be here," Foran said.

His attitude reflects what makes mountaineering so powerful. Foran acknowledged "Mother Nature reminding us who's boss" while maintaining deep respect and gratitude for the chance to pursue his goal.
