Clover High Wins First State Wrestling Title in Thriller

The Clover High School wrestling team walked into their first state championship match as underdogs and walked out as champions.

The Blue Eagles defeated James Island High School 34-31 on Wednesday in Lexington, South Carolina, claiming the Class 5A Division I state title for the first time in school history. The match was as close as they come, with the outcome uncertain until the final seconds.

Coming into the championship, James Island held the top ranking while Clover sat at number two. The teams had met before in December, when James Island won handily 45-23. But this time, the Blue Eagles were ready.

The match swung back and forth throughout the evening. Xavier Gonzalez put Clover ahead with a pin at 144 pounds, setting the stage for a dramatic finish. With just two matches remaining, Jonas Plummer secured a technical fall at 215 pounds to give the Blue Eagles a 34-28 lead.

Everything came down to the heavyweight bout. Clover's Messiah Outing faced James Island's Slevenn Hernandez in the final match of the night. Although Hernandez won the match, Outing avoided a pin, preserving just enough points for Clover to hold on for the title.

The championship capped a remarkable 30-3 season for the Blue Eagles. They dominated their playoff run, defeating Dutch Fork 68-12, Boiling Springs 45-29, and crosstown rival Rock Hill 40-29 to reach the finals.

The Ripple Effect

This historic win means even more knowing it's Clover's final season competing in Class 5A. The school moves down to Class 4A next year as part of the South Carolina High School League's realignment. The Blue Eagles chose the perfect moment to leave their mark on the bigger division.

For James Island, this marked their first state championship appearance since the 1990s. Their journey back to the finals alone shows the strength of wrestling programs across South Carolina.

Now both teams shift focus to individual competitions. The state qualifier happens this weekend, followed by individual state championships next week in Florence. Many of these same wrestlers will face off again, this time competing for personal glory rather than team titles.
