Coach Bud Foster Gives $100K to Virginia Health Center

When a small-town health center needed help expanding to serve more patients, a football legend stepped up with the kind of donation that changes lives far beyond the field.

The Lunch Pail Defense Foundation, founded by former Virginia Tech Football Coach Bud Foster, presented a $100,000 check to the Community Health Center of the New River Valley in Christiansburg, Virginia. The generous gift marks a major milestone for a facility bursting at the seams trying to serve its growing community.

The current building simply can't keep up with demand anymore. Patient surveys keep delivering the same message: we need more services, and we need them now.

The $5 million project will create a brand new 36,000 square foot facility replacing the cramped existing location. The expanded center will offer medical care, dental services, behavioral health treatment, and substance use recovery programs, plus add an in-house pharmacy for the first time.

"We've needed a facility like this as we grow larger and it's getting harder and harder for health care, to find health care and get the right health care," Foster explained. His foundation's gift reflects a deep understanding of rural healthcare challenges.

The Ripple Effect

This expansion will do more than just add square footage. Thousands of additional patients will gain access to comprehensive care once the new facility opens, with rural residents benefiting most from the increased capacity.

The project addresses a critical gap in healthcare access across the New River Valley region. For families who currently struggle to find providers or afford prescriptions, an expanded center with an in-house pharmacy could mean the difference between managing chronic conditions and letting them worsen.

Foster's foundation has already helped push the fundraising effort to the halfway mark. Construction is expected to begin later this year, with doors opening to patients just one year after groundbreaking.

The timeline means relief is coming soon for a community that's waited long enough. More donors are needed to cross the finish line, but the momentum is building alongside community support.
