Coast Guard Fireman Saves Unconscious Cliff Diver

Liam Mooney was enjoying an evening at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego when he heard the sound no one wants to hear: a body hitting rocks.

A man climbing the cliffs at Pappy's Point had lost his footing around 8 p.m. on July 28. He fell, struck the rocks, and plunged unconscious into the water below.

The 21-year-old Coast Guard fireman didn't wait for help. He jumped into the water and held the injured man's head above the surface, keeping him breathing while lifeguards raced to the scene on jet-skis and boats.

"He was off-duty, but his training kicked in," said his grandmother Josephine Caulfield, who still lives in Cold Spring, New York, where Liam grew up. The family moved to California in 2020 when Liam was a student at Haldane High School.

San Diego Fire-Rescue teams arrived quickly and placed the victim in a stretcher. They hauled him up the cliff face on a cable and rushed him to a hospital with traumatic injuries.

A bystander captured the fall on video, showing just how dangerous the popular cliff-diving spot can be. Just two days earlier, on July 26, a teenager was critically injured at the same location.

Mooney's quick action shows what happens when training meets courage in a split-second decision. He could have waited for professional rescuers, but he knew every second counted for someone unconscious in the water.

His grandmother's pride reflects what many feel when they see someone so young step up in a crisis. Coast Guard training prepared him for rescues, but choosing to act while off-duty reveals character that goes beyond any job description.

The rescue reminds us that heroes often look like regular people enjoying their evening until the moment someone needs them.
