Coco Gauff Joins Williams Sisters in Elite Tennis Club

Coco Gauff has joined tennis royalty, matching a feat accomplished only by Venus and Serena Williams in more than three decades of professional tennis.

The 21-year-old advanced to her second consecutive Italian Open final on Thursday after defeating Romania's Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3. With the win, Gauff became just the third American woman to reach consecutive finals in Rome since the tournament adopted its current format in 1990.

Venus Williams first achieved this milestone from 1998 to 1999, losing her first final before claiming victory against France's Mary Pierce. Serena followed 14 years later, winning back-to-back Italian Open titles in 2013 and 2014.

The accomplishment feels even sweeter considering Gauff was one point away from elimination in the fourth round. She fought back to keep her tournament hopes alive and hasn't looked back since.
