College Student Survives Rare Stroke, Cycles for Others
Ethan Harbridge was just 20 when a rare brain bleed caused a stroke that changed everything. Now he's riding to raise awareness for the care that saved his life.
When Ethan Harbridge collapsed in February 2024, his friends didn't hesitate to call for help. That split-second decision saved the 20-year-old college student's life.
Doctors at the hospital discovered a brain bleed caused by a rare AVM rupture. The rupture triggered a hemorrhagic stroke, landing Harbridge in the ICU with weeks he can't remember.
"I thought that I would be back to doing normal things in a couple of months," Harbridge said. The reality of recovery looked completely different than what he imagined.
Physical therapy became his new normal as he slowly regained consciousness and strength. The long road back taught him something he never expected: a profound sense of gratitude.
"I came out on the other side because of the amazing work that healthcare provided for me," Harbridge said. Now he's determined to give back to the research and rapid response that made his survival possible.

Why This Inspires
Harbridge could have retreated after his stroke. Instead, he's choosing to show up for others facing similar battles.
On May 13, he'll join hundreds of riders at CycleNation in Madison. The indoor cycling event at The Sylvee raises money for the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association from 5 to 8 p.m.
"It doesn't matter if you're the most athletic person, that's not why you're there," Harbridge explained. "You're there just for support, and you feed off of the other people's energies."
Riders of all abilities are welcome, and anyone can come cheer on participants. For Harbridge, it's about more than cycling—it's about community, awareness, and the resources that help stroke survivors reclaim their lives.
His message is simple: the quick response and expert care he received made all the difference, and supporting organizations that fund that work can help save the next person.
