Colombia Trains 200K Youth in Digital Skills for Jobs

Colombia just proved that internet access means nothing without the skills to turn it into opportunity.

The country trained more than 200,000 people in digital skills through national programs, with women making up over half the participants. This massive push addresses a surprising problem: despite high internet use among Colombian youth, most spend time on social media rather than using digital tools for education or job hunting.

The gap between scrolling and earning was clear. Young Colombians had connectivity but lacked pathways to translate that access into sustainable livelihoods.

Enter the Inclusive Digital Transformation Facility, a program supported by the Joint SDG Fund and the European Union. Rather than just building more infrastructure, the initiative connects digital access directly to employment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and civic participation.

The program targets regions that need it most. Young people in Colombia's Pacific and Caribbean areas face weaker infrastructure, fewer job opportunities, and limited access to professional networks that could turn their digital skills into careers.

Through national digital innovation events, participants explored immersive technologies and developed practical solutions for reducing digital inequality. Youth leaders, tech experts, civil society groups, and government officials gathered to strengthen links between digital training and actual labor market needs.

The initiative goes beyond technical training. It connects aspiring entrepreneurs with mentorship and employment pathways designed around their local communities, ensuring solutions come from the ground up rather than imposed from above.

The Ripple Effect

Colombia's approach demonstrates how digital transformation can reduce regional inequality when done right. By decentralizing the digital economy away from major urban centers, the program ensures historically underserved communities benefit from infrastructure investments and innovation opportunities.

Young Colombians are already contributing through content creation, civic technology, and grassroots innovation. The program amplifies their creativity by removing structural barriers that prevented their ideas from reaching markets.

Running through October 2027, this long-term commitment treats connectivity as a starting point rather than a finish line. Public institutions, private companies, and local communities collaborate to generate lasting economic benefits beyond just getting people online.

The initiative shows other countries a blueprint: meaningful digital inclusion requires connecting infrastructure to skills development, employment pathways, and inclusive policymaking that gives young people a voice in shaping their digital future.
