Colorado Approves Largest Solar Farm to Power 99K Homes
Adams County just greenlit a $675 million solar project that will power nearly 100,000 homes while creating 400 jobs and generating $40 million in tax revenue. Even better, it's coming together with zero local opposition and strong support from five-generation farmers.
A solar farm the size of 2,100 football fields is coming to Colorado, and locals couldn't be happier about it.
Adams County commissioners approved the Big Bronco Solar and Storage project on October 13, clearing the way for 2,800 acres near Denver International Airport to transform into the state's largest solar facility. The $675 million investment will generate 300 megawatts of electricity, enough to keep the lights on in 99,000 homes.
What makes this project special goes beyond its size. The solar farm will feed power directly into Denver's grid without requiring expensive new transmission lines, which means lower electricity bills for everyone. A massive battery system will store excess energy for cloudy days, delivering up to 300 megawatts when needed most.
The project sailed through public hearings without a single local opponent. Dennis Davis, whose family has farmed 320 acres near the site for five generations, enthusiastically backed the plan. "Farmers out there are at the whim of Mother Nature and Mother Nature's been getting more and more cruel," Davis told commissioners. "I feel it would be a very positive use for the property."
Construction won't begin for two years, but when it does, up to 400 workers will get paychecks during peak building phases. Many of those jobs will go to local residents. Over the next 40 years, the facility will pump $40 million in property tax revenue into Adams County special districts, funding schools, roads, and emergency services.
The Ripple Effect
Colorado is riding a remarkable clean energy wave. The state more than tripled its renewable energy generation since 2010, and wind, solar, and geothermal sources now supply 44% of Colorado's electricity. By 2030, that number should hit 80%.
The eastern plains are becoming America's renewable energy heartland. Kit Carson County hosts eight wind farms and generates enough clean electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes. Pueblo County accounts for nearly half the state's solar farm acreage.
This momentum isn't slowing down. Colorado just became the fourth state to legalize plug-in solar panels for balconies and patios, letting residents join the clean energy revolution starting January 2027. Renewables remain the cheapest source of new power generation, even without subsidies, making projects like Big Bronco financially smart and environmentally essential.
The developers plan to restore native vegetation and protect topsoil on the former dryland farming site, turning sun-baked farmland into an ecosystem that generates clean power for decades.
One hundred thousand homes will soon run on pure Colorado sunshine.
