Assembled hygiene kit containing personal care supplies for unhoused individuals in Central Springs

Colorado Dad's Hygiene Drive Brings Community Together

✨ Faith Restored

Lary Walker organized a hygiene kit drive in Central Springs that drew dozens of volunteers and produced hundreds of kits for unhoused neighbors. His effort connected with local nonprofits facing donation shortages and inspired plans for ongoing support.

When Lary Walker announced a hygiene drive in Central Springs, Colorado, he hoped a few neighbors might show up to help. Instead, dozens of volunteers filled the space, assembling hundreds of hygiene kits while laughing and working side by side.

Walker says the event was never about recognition. "It was about what they're doing back there, which is working together, laughing and enjoying the moment of helping other people," he explains.

His son Savion serves as one of his biggest motivations. "He's the reason, one of the reasons why I'm actually doing this to show him the right way to move," Walker says. "He's a part of the change."

The feeling is mutual. "I'm proud of him for doing all of this," Savion says, noting how many people have stepped up because of his father's efforts.

The timing couldn't have been better for Amanda Page, president of Pay It Fur-ward, a nonprofit that helps unhoused people care for their pets. Page connected with Walker after hearing about the drive and says hygiene kit donations have slowed recently. "This is a huge deal for us, huge deal," she says.

The Ripple Effect

Walker's initiative goes beyond a one-time event. He and Page are planning ongoing partnerships, and Walker has identified five additional organizations that need hygiene supplies. When those groups aren't running their own drives, Walker plans to fill the gap.

He's also expanding his vision beyond toothpaste and soap. Walker is reaching out to shelters and recovery centers to learn what else they need. "They're needing volunteers, they're needing laundry soaps and stuff like that, so I'm going to try to help build on that," he says.

Page sees Walker's approach as a model for community action. "It should be about the greater good of the community, and it should be about how can we help the most amount of people we can in the shortest amount of time," she says. "And that's what this is all about."

What started as one father's effort to show his son how to make a difference has become a movement of regular neighbors coming together to care for their community.
