Colorado Firefighters Rescue Deer Stranded on Frozen Lake

When an injured deer crashed through the ice at Curr Reservoir in Colorado Springs, it looked like the end of the line. The animal managed to claw its way back onto the frozen surface, but exhaustion left it stranded just feet from the dangerous break.

That's when Colorado Springs Fire Department crews suited up and headed out. After Parks and Wildlife called for help on January 13, firefighters geared up in full ice rescue equipment and carefully made their way across the treacherous frozen lake.

The deer was understandably terrified as rescuers approached. But the team worked quickly and gently, securing the frightened animal in a harness and sliding it across the ice to safety.

The transformation was instant. As soon as the deer's hooves touched solid ground, strength flooded back into its legs and it bolted into the woods, free and alive.
