Colorado Pitcher Wins State Title in Final High School Game
After losing three straight championship games, senior pitcher Gage Viken delivered a shutout performance to bring his hometown team their first baseball title since 2019. Playing on his home field one last time, he struck out 10 batters and allowed just two hits.
For three years, Gage Viken stood on the losing side of Colorado's Class 3A baseball championship. On Saturday, the senior finally got to celebrate.
Viken pitched a dominant game at his home field in Greeley, leading University High School to a 5-0 victory over D'Evelyn. He struck out 10 batters while allowing only two hits, silencing a team that had scored 12 runs the day before.
"I've been on varsity since I was a freshman," Viken said. "I've lost the last three years. Last year hurt a lot. To come back and win like this, there's nothing like it."
The victory was especially sweet for a program that had become heartbreakingly familiar with second place. University had lost four championship games in a row before Saturday's breakthrough.
Playing at Butch Butler Field, where he'd competed countless times, Viken used his fastball, slider, and changeup to retire batter after batter. Coach Casey Miller said his star pitcher was locked in from the moment he arrived for morning practice at 7:30.
"That's what Gage Viken does here at Butch Butler," Miller said.

University's offense backed up their ace with timely hitting. Joel Ramirez drove in the first run in the opening inning. Damian Alvarez added another RBI single in the third, followed by Viken's own RBI hit. Brody Duran and Evan Davey-Anderson each contributed sacrifice flies to round out the scoring.
The Bulldogs finished their season with a 27-2 record and won 18 straight games when Viken took the mound. He ended his high school career with an 8-1 record and a 1.62 ERA.
Why This Inspires
Viken's story shows how persistence pays off even when defeat seems like a pattern. He could have given up after three crushing losses, but instead he came back stronger each year.
The senior credits his teammates, especially catcher Max Davis, for his success. "I wouldn't want another catcher," Viken said.
Several University players are heading to top junior college programs, with Viken and Ramirez signing with Antelope Valley in California and Alvarez joining McLennan in Texas. Their 18-game winning streak with Viken pitching proves that teamwork and trust matter as much as talent.
For Coach Miller, who earned his third state championship since joining University in 2018, the victory validated years of near misses. "I really believe that we've been the best team in the state for awhile," he said. "I think these boys earned it and I think they deserved it."
Sometimes the sweetest victories are the ones you had to wait for.
