Colorado Protects EV Drivers With New Charging Station Rules

Colorado is setting a new standard for electric vehicle drivers with regulations that guarantee fair and transparent charging at every public station across the state.

The new rules, taking effect July 1, 2026, require all retail EV charging stations to register with the Colorado Division of Oil and Public Safety and undergo professional testing. The goal is simple: make sure every driver pays only for the electricity they actually receive.

"As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow across our state, it is vital that drivers have confidence in the accuracy of the charging infrastructure," said Mahesh Albuquerque, director of the Division of Oil and Public Safety. He calls the regulations "a significant step forward in ensuring consumer protection and marketplace consistency."

Here's how it works. Every charging station owner must register their equipment and have it tested by certified service agents. New stations installed after July 1 get 30 days to register, while existing stations have until January 1, 2027 to comply.

The state is giving businesses breathing room to adjust. While the rules officially launch this summer, Colorado won't enforce penalties until July 1, 2027, giving station owners a full year to get their equipment tested and registered.

The regulations only apply to stations that charge fees for electricity. Free charging stations, home chargers, and wholesale electricity delivery remain unaffected.
